World Polio Day

On October 22, 2019, and on behalf of the Alexandria City Council, Justin M. Wilson, Mayor of the City of Alexandria, Virginia, recognized October 24, 2019, as “World Polio Day.”  The Mayor invited the members of the Rotary Club of Alexandria Central to City Hall to witness the Proclamation.

Beginning in 1988, more than one thousand children worldwide were paralyzed daily by polio.  Since then, thanks to twenty million volunteers in two hundred countries, more than 2.5 million children have been immunized against polio at a cost of approximately eleven billion dollars.

On October 24, 2019, thousands of Rotary clubs worldwide held events to commemorate the birth of Dr. Jonas Salk, who developed the first vaccine for poliomyelitis.

Led under the auspices of Rosemarie Floyd, Revolutionary Solutions, LLC, a raffle was held to benefit World Polio Day.  Members of the Rotary Club of Alexandria Central and Ms. Floyd presented the funds at City Hall at 7 p.m. during the proclamation ceremony.

We share our sincere appreciation with everyone who purchased raffle tickets or contributed to the cause.
